The United States Air Force came into existence on September 18, 1947, with the official activation of the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. On that date, Stuart Symington took the oath of office and became the first Secretary of the Air Force. Accordingly, the Air Force celebrates September 18th as the date of its creation. (1) Yet, two ! months earlier, an equally significant but generally forgotten event in the history of the Air Force occurred with little fanfare.
