BAA has submitted its Generation 2 planning application to develop a second runway and a new terminal at London's Stansted Airport. The proposal follows four years of intensive work to draw up the plans and to support the recommendations of the government's Air Transport White Paper, which proposed Stansted as the location for the South East of England's first new runway in more than 50 years. Among a series of savings made over the original plan during this process is a reduction of land required from 1,730 acres (700ha) to 1,092 acres (442ha).
