The Illinois Department of Transportation sent an outline plan for the third Chicago airport to the FAA in February. The FAA had already given its approval for the airport site back in 2002. The new facility is to be built at Peotone, near Chicago, Illinois, and so far the state has acquired almost 2,000 acres (809ha) of land at a cost of $24 million but has to purchase at least another 3,000 acres (1,214ha).
