Nanotubes improve corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys.(WEAR AND CORROSION RESISTANCE)

Researchers from Shinshu University, Japan, have improved the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys by adding multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) to them. The mechanical characteristics of the alloys were also improved, making these materials promising alternatives to aluminium alloys and engineering plastics.

Magnesium alloys are routinely used in automobile components, electronic appliances and sporting goods because they are lightweight. However, the materials need to be coated during processing to improve their corrosion properties, which limits the applications that they can be used in.
