Boeing certifies carbon brakes.(AEROSPACE)

The Boeing Co, USA, has completed certification testing of carbon brakes designed by French company Messier-Bugatti for the 737 family of aeroplanes.

The test programme lasted a month. During that time, Boeing was able to demonstrate equivalent performance between steel and carbon brakes.

By using carbon brakes there is a verified weight savings of 320 kg (700 pounds), compared to high-capacity steel brakes for Boeings' Next-Generation 737-700/800/900ERs, and 250 kg (550 pounds) on standard-capacity steel brakes for Next-Generation 737-600/700s, Boeing says. This reduced weight contributes to reductions in associated consumption of fuel and carbon dioxide emissions.
