Sugar beet filler.(ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES)

Researchers from the US Agricultural Research Service (ARS) say that sugar beet pulp may help cut the costs of making biodegradable plastic by acting as a cheap environmentally friendly filler.

The pulp gained from sugar beet is a fibre-rich by-product of sucrose extraction procedures used by sugar beet processors. Most of the 36.29 Mt (40 million tons) of sugar beet pulp that is generated in the USA each year is currently used as livestock feed. However, ARS chemists Victoria Finkenstadt and LinShu Liu have been working on a project to convert the pulp into a specialized filler material for polylactic acid (PLA).
