Could Democrat Ron Wyden's recent success at the polls spell doom for Republican prospects this November - and for tax reform in 1997?
Wyden, an eight-term congressman from Oregon's third district, narrowly won a special election to fill the Senate seat vacated last fall by Republican Bob Packwood, who resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct.
Capitol Hill watchers are sure to read plenty into Wyden's victory, and the crowing by some Democrats is well underway. Dan Fowler, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, has declared that the Oregon election begins a "path to victory" for the party in November.
