Article: Who are the tanker drivers trying to fool?

IN the bad old days of union militancy, shop-floor leaders were fond oftalking about 'derisory' pay offers. This time it is the petrol tanker drivers'claim that is a mockery. By the standards of most Scottish workers, they arenot at all badly rewarded.

The strikers' own leader, absurdly, is already paid more than his colleaguesare demanding because he wisely declined a cash buy-out in favour of long-termbenefits - as most of them could also have done. This contrived dispute is muchmore about a trade union trying to justify its existence than it is about agenuine grievance. It is only possible because petrol supply is so vulnerableto instant disruption.
