* As machines continue to replace humans in the workplace, we frequently hear complaints about something being lost in the transition. Yet in competitive waterskiing, competitors and judges are hailing the recent introduction of two new electronic devices that eliminate variables introduced by human involvement.
One is a system that uses a computer and video camera to calculate ski-jump distances with pinpoint accuracy. The second is an electronic throttle-control system that removes driver input from the helms of tow boats. Both devices debuted last year at the Pan American Games, which were held in Santa Fe, Argentina.
