On the eighth floor of Van Hise hall, nestled among the language programs in UW-Madison's Tower of Babel, the German department still sits where Biddy Martin left it as a promising graduate student 23 years ago.
Then, she was a prolific scholar and active in Madison's vibrant intellectual and political community, participating in a strike with other teaching assistants who wanted to unionize.
