Mediterranean diet lowers risk of diabetes.(Brief article)

The Mediterranean diet high in plant foods and olive oil and low in red meat, dairy products, trans fatty acids and alcohol has already been shown to have a role in preventing heart disease. Now it appears to reduce the chances of developing type 2 diabetes, according to a new preliminary study conducted in Spain and published recently in the British Medical journal. Type 2 diabetes is linked to obesity as well as heart disease.

The research team led by M. A. Martinez-Gonzalez at the University of Navarra, Pamplona, recruited nearly 14,000 healthy university graduates who were initially free of diabetes. The study was designed to answer two questions: Would people adhere ...
