VAN NUYS -- By this time last year, crime numbers painted a grim picture of the Van Nuys area -- nine killed, 28 shot and 69 reports of gunfire.
But this year, as violence and a proposed gang injunction have made headlines in other parts of the San Fernando Valley, Van Nuys has seen a remarkable drop in crime.
Through June 7, there were just three homicides in the area patrolled by the Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys Division, only nine shooting victims and a mere 21 reports of shots fired -- numbers comparable to the historically safer Devonshire Division of the Northwest Valley.
