WORK is finally underway on Leigh's long awaited first Wetherspoons.
And the new pub will be named after Leigh's most famous literary son John Hilton (pictured), who wrote the novel 'Goodbye Mr Chips'.
The old hippodrome on Leigh Road, formerly a cinema, Lazerquest and, most recently, Cube nightclub, has been vacant for several years but is due to re-open in May 2007 after a [pounds sterling]1.8m conversion.
Andy Ince, the director in charge of the project, said: "We were due to open last year but the Wetherspoons chain made the decision to make all of its pubs no smoking and they had to under-go a major review ...
