A LOCAL Alderman has spoken of the emotion surrounding the 90th anniversary service of the Battle of the Somme.
Ulster Unionist Mervyn Rea travelled with fellow councillors John Smyth and Oran Keenan to commemorate the bloody battle that began on July 1, 1916..
The local party travelled out last Tuesday, to take part in a series of services and visits to war cemeteries in northern France and Belgium.
Speaking on his return, Ald. Rea, who is Antrim Council's representative on the Somme Association, commented: "We visited umpteen cemeteries as we usually do, all of which were very heart searching."
