Indicating it has practically defeated both al-Qaeda insurgents on the Sunni side and the fractious Jaysh al-Mahdi (JaM) militia groups on the Shi'ite side, the Americans now are pressing ahead with negotiations for a status of forces agreement allowing the US to have long-term bases in Iraq. And Iran seems to be a major factor in opposing or backing this, with Tehran and Washington likely to have a face-saving formula to their nuclear stand-off if the next US president is judged favourable to the Shi'ite theocracy.
