Children with heart disease may face behavior problems.

Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) who underwent surgery as infants run a significant risk of having problems with inattention and hyperactivity and often require remedial services in school according to an April 7, 2008, news release from The Children's Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Each year, more than 10,000 newborns in the United States have CHD severe enough to require surgery before they are one year old. Advances in medical and surgical treatments have improved survival rates of even the most complex conditions; however, the long term issue has become quality of life as these patients reach school age and beyond.
