Presidential addresses can take two contrasting forms. The form which I have adopted in the past has been a short, illustrated talk on some aspect of my own recent research which I thought would interest those who attend the Annual General Meeting and also interest those more numerous members who afterwards read the text in History magazine.
This year I decided to pursue the alternative path and talk about a matter of current concern to the Society, to the historical profession and to all in the community interested in the cultural environment. I have entitled the talk quite simply 'Heritage and the Historian'.
