Since 1971, Army personnel have trained the technicians of civilian public safety bomb squads (PSBSs) at the Hazardous Devices School (HDS) at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. HDS, which is operated by the Army Ordnance Munitions and Electronic Maintenance School, offers training in render-safe and disposal procedures for improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other hazardous materials to selected law enforcement and public safety officers. HDS is actually a ,joint Army and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) enterprise.
