It has long been recognized that a sequence in III.ii of Patient Grissil, written by Thomas Dekker, Henry Chettle, and William Haughton between October and December 1599 and apparently performed at the Rose the following January or February, strongly echoes IV.iii of Ben Jonson's Every Man Out of His Humour, first staged in late 1599 at the Globe. (1) In Jonson's play, the courtier Fastidius Brisk tells the knight Puntarvolo of a duel over a woman between himself and one Luculento; though neither disputant is seriously injured, the wounds sustained by each man's apparel are described in ostentatious and comic detail.
