SEVERAL groups in Tayside have shown interest in taking over and restoring a replica of the 'Charlotte Dundas', which was purported to be the first practical steam-powered vessel in the world.
At the moment, the three-quarter scale hull is stored in the yard of Mackays Boatyard, the company having been asked to provide quotations for breaking it up and also for removing it and storing it.
One of the principals of the yard, Mr Harry Simpson, said he is not overly enamoured of the idea of cutting up the vessel. He told the Herald, "OK, it's only a replica, but it is a replica of a vessel that is part of history and there is nothing else like it."
