Volkswagen plans to slash fuel consumption by its vehicles in order to meet forthcoming European Union targets cutting average carbon dioxide exhaust emissions to 120 grams per kilometre by 2015.
"The German carmakers can achieve that," said VW chief executive Martin Winterkorn.
Currently, the average fleet emissions for all European carmakers is just below 160g/km in Europe.
Although Volkswagen and its other passenger-car brands already offer about 100 model derivatives in total that emit 120g of CO2 or less, Winterkorn said customer interest in these fuel-efficient cars had been lacking.
