DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. _ Almost 18 months ago, Ernie Irvan lay in a hospital near Detroit. Doctors gave him a 10 percent chance to live.
He had crashed on Aug. 20, 1994, while practicing for a NASCAR race at Michigan International Speedway. His doctors doubted Irvan could survive the injuries to the brain and lungs he had suffered in that awful accident.
Sunday, shortly after 12:15 p.m. ET, Irvan will take the green flag to start the Daytona 500, the Winston Cup Series season opener.
That's a miracle in itself.
