When the business market is soft, it's best for banks to target prospecting at those businesses that are expected to do best under adverse economic conditions.

A new prospecting tool, entitled "Industry Prospector," is designed to help banks and other companies figure out what industries have the greatest business opportunities. The tool was released by First Research, Raleigh, N.C. The company is a Division of Hoover's.

The tool ranks industries by four key economic metrics: financials, human resources, industry drivers and industry growth forecasts. The data is pulled from several sources, including financial, government and company databases.
