I'm young, I'm Ivy League-educated, and I'm politically disenfranchised. When I graduated from college this past December, I thought that I would assume certain social responsibilities. But the conventional American political institutions-namely, the political parties-can't use me. I don't know what gave me the idea that they could. Maybe it was the fact that I graduated in the top 2 percent of my class or that I won the only award that the political science department gave out for the study of American politics.
