BRITAIN'S men yesterday won the European Cup for the first time sincethe days when the contributions of great champions of the calibre of DarrenCampbell, Jonathan Edwards and Colin Jackson could be counted upon.

This year the roll of honour is filled by less illustrious names but after thefinest two days of competition at a European Cup by Britain's men and womensince 1989, hope springs eternal that we have yet to see the glorious best ofwinners such as Phillips Idowu, Martyn Rooney and Andy Baddeley.

It would be unwise to read too much into individual contributions to thecountry's cause just 46 days before the Olympic Games open.
