A month ago or so, I went for a run in my Syracuse neighborhood on the night before the city picked up trash. Most families had already set their garbage cans and blue recycling bins by the curb. I noticed several crushed plastic bottles that someone had chucked into the street. I grabbed them and dropped them into a blue bin, which caused me to try a little experiment.
I began keeping count of how many discarded plastic bottles I picked up. By the time I finished, while I'd thrown about two dozen nonreturnables into blue bins, I'd found only one discarded soda container that would fetch a nickel deposit.
