The Red Sox played last night's game with Sean Casey neither on their bench nor in his uniform as he began serving his three-game suspension for unnecessary roughness in the June 3 rumble with the Rays.
Casey dropped his appeal without a hearing, not the tack chosen by scrum catalyst Coco Crisp, who made a face-to-face appeal with Bob Watson, Major League Baseball's vice president of rules and on-field operations.
A decision on Crisp's seven-game suspension could come as early as today. When the ruling is announced, Crisp will have to begin serving any suspension immediately.
Crisp preferred not to divulge his lawyerly approach.
