PERVOMAYSKAYA, Russia--A frigid wind blows over what remains of this village in southern Russia. The wind whistles through burned and bombed-out houses, the bare timbers of their roofs outlined like dark skeletons in the snow's reflected light. The wind piles snow on the bodies of dead cows and sheep lying bloated in the frozen mud street.
Villagers huddle in small groups. Many are in shock. Their homes are gone. They have no place to go, little food to eat, and only a dim understanding of why their village was so suddenly destroyed.
