Joseph Stalin plays an odd role in the historiography of the twentieth century. On the one hand, he is readily included among the century's other monsters: Hitler, Mao, and Mussolini. On the other hand, he was an essential ally of the West in the great struggle against Nazi Germany. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, along with the opening of numerous Russian archives, have made reappraisals of Stalin's career both possible and necessary.
