BEND - The stars shine bright on Pine Mountain, a 6,300-foot ridge on the edge of the desert east of Bend.
The place is best known for its visitable University of Oregon observatory, but the mountain itself is also a star attraction. With a bit of easy bushwhacking, you can hike 2.8 miles along the open crest of a rolling ridgeline, discovering rock formations, ponderosa pine groves, wildflowers and views across Eastern Oregon.
