DEAR DR. FOX: I'm writing because it's summer here in Florida and I'm not looking forward to it.
I have an 8-year-old miniature schnauzer that has a real problem with thunder and lightning storms. When she was a puppy, I caged her while at work, but it didn't work out - anxiety to the max. What do you suggest to calm my dog down in stressful situations?

DEAR J.H.: Many dogs suffer from "thunderphobia." Anti-anxiety drugs like Xanax are effective, especially for Fourth of July fireworks, but not practical for unpredictable storms.
