Conservationists unveiled a Save the Flamingo campaign this week to protect one of the world's most important lesser flamingo sites - a permanent wetland called Kamfers Dam in Kimberley, plagued by raw sewage and burgeoning development.
Mark Anderson, of the campaign, said a visit to the local Homevale sewerage works last weekend found that large parts are not functioning and that "some of the infrastructure is abandoned". This was causing a "high volume of extremely poor quality raw sewage" to gush into the dam.
Kamfers Dam is the only lesser flamingo breeding site in SA - but its occupants face a growing danger.
