The University of Washington's most visible sports teams - football, men's and women's basketball - have struggled. Husky Stadium needs repairs. The Athletic Department has been without a permanent director for more than four months.
One would think this would be a bad time to try to raise money at Washington.
Not so.
In the midst of the problems, Huskies backers have put money where their loyalties lie. In doing so they turned Students First, a funding drive spawned by UW president Mark Emmert and dedicated to increasing the number of endowments for need-based athletic scholarships, into a rousing success.
