WARREN GATLAND knows better than anybody the image problem northern hemisphere rugby suffers with its southern rivals.

He may not personally agree with the common Tri-Nations assessment that northern hemisphere rugby is a joke - and he is striving to ensure he has the last laugh with Wales.

But it's hard to make an argument against the common view held in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa at the moment.

Just one look at the results of the summer tours underlined the view.
