The Iraqi and US governments are quietly negotiating a long-term pact allowing the American forces to stay in this country beyond 2008. Shi'ite MP Sami al-'Askari, an adviser to PM Nuri al-Maliki, says Iraq needs the US military presence to continue to help it end both the illegal militias on the Shi'ite side and the Neo-Salafi and Saddamist insurgents on the Sunni side. Most Iraqi politicians view the presence of the US military as a conductor and co-ordinator to the ongoing political process.
