Younger women, Medicaid enrollees and those with low education are more likely to report postpartum depression, pointing to a need for health departments to evaluate the effectiveness of targeted mental health outreach.
In a study published in the April 11 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, researchers analyzed data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System for 2004-2005 and found that the prevalence of self-reported postpartum depression in 17 states ranged from a low of 11.7 percent in Maine to 20.4 percent in New Mexico.
