After some reluctance, the Bush administration June 9 formally asked Congress for an increase of $275 million above its current budget request to enhance food and drug safety programs, according to Reuters.
The White House initially requested an FDA budget of $2.4 billion for the 2009 fiscal year starting in October, a 5.7% increase over last year's budget.
In mid-May, FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach wrote a letter to senators suggesting an additional $275 million in the wake of a series of hearings on Capitol Hill over FDA's handling of the crisis involving contaminated heparin from China.
