MONTEREY, Calif. _ Sunlight shimmered on the water like a bouquet of sparkles as two days of kayaking in Monterey Bay came to an end.
The sun abruptly burst through the clouds at the end of our expedition, illuminating dozens of baby smelt that breached the surface like fishy fireflies.
It was a spectacular finish to a weekend of easy kayaking in the nation's newest sea sanctuary and nearby wetlands.
