Last July 4, Rashon Stanley, 24, was stabbed to death on Stolp Avenue after a dispute over a carelessly thrown firework.
Stanley's death, which occurred during a period of rampant use of illegal fireworks in the city, has prompted the Syracuse Police Department to form its first police unit dedicated to combating fireworks.
The unit will have a sergeant and four officers, said Syracuse Police Chief Gary Miguel.
The temporary squad is dedicated only to answering illegal fireworks calls and investigating fireworks sales in the city during the weeks surrounding the Fourth of July, Miguel said. It will ...
