As these lines go to press, the American Brahms Society marks the first decade of its existence. Seeking to sustain the scholarly interest in Brahms's life, music, and historical position that had begun to swell in the period leading to the sesquicentennial of the composer's birth, in 1983, the Society's initial Board of Directors resolved to publish a series of Brahms Studies. The first of these volumes, edited by George S. Bozarth, appeared in 1990 and included all twenty-four papers that had been delivered at the International Brahms Conference held at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., in May 1983.
