Maude brought the chopper down onto the steak board she used as a chopping block with all her force. These people must think that she didn't have to eat. She reached for the telephone that she had trailed into the kitchen from the living room earlier on, wondering when the calls were going to stop. Anyway she had to eat and she looked at her watch realizing that it was 11 a.m.; for two hours she had been trying to chop vegetables for her stew and the telephone would not let her finish.
"Yes," she answered almost rudely.
"It's only me again."
"Go on."
"Well, hear now, Millicent says everybody want to go and demonstrate outside City Hall. 'Bout three people ...
