THE automation system for Petri dish production sold by Hekuma of Germany has been optimised to handle the demand for higher output which it says comes from "steeply rising" demand from laboratories worldwide.
A new high speed lateral take-out robot gives cycle times of around 4 seconds and can handle 12 + 12 cavity moulds (dishes and lids).
Because of the fragility of the polystyrene dishes Hekuma has paid particular attention to handling them gently. The lids and dishes are not gripped mechanically, but taken up by fixtures tailor-made to their shape and kept there by vacuum.
