For more than six months, Madison police had thought Adam Peterson could be dangerous, placing the former University of Wisconsin student on a list of residents with possible mental illnesses.

On Friday, the 2006 Stillwater High School graduate was charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Joel Marino, a 31-year-old man killed at his Madison home in January, just a week after Peterson's behavior first alarmed police. Peterson was arrested at his mother's rural Stillwater home Thursday after DNA tests linked him to a knife and other evidence found at the scene of the killing.
