TRENTON, N.J. _ Arguing there's an increased risk of dangerous radioactive leaks occurring at the Salem Nuclear Generating Station because of cracks in the station's steam generator tubes, several watchdog organizations Tuesday demanded that both Salem 1 and Salem 2 be shut down permanently.
But Public Service Electric & Gas, the operator and a principal owner of the Salem facility, dismissed the attack, and said it won't restart either of the currently shut Salem generators until satisfied they are safe. PSE&G spokesman Neil Brown said the watchdog groups were acting irresponsibly. ``It's not in anyone's best interest to use scare tactics,'' he said.
