Over the millenia amber has had mystical connotations largely due to its fiery color and a remarkably smooth texture that makes it both sensual and soothing to the touch. An exhibition that explores amber from a scientific point of view, as encasing an amazing diversity of species, and its use for artistic expression since ancient times will be on view at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City from February 10 until September 2. Entitled Amber: Window to the Past, it is divided into two parts: "Amber in Nature," focusing on some 146 fossil specimens, and "Amber in Art," which includes 94 sumptuous objects ranging from small amulets to inlaid cabinets.
