Michael Angus used to spend his evenings camped out in front of his television _ a recent novel in one hand and a notebook in the other _ catching the acrobatics of American English.

Last year was ripe for slang, the editorial director of Webster's New World Dictionaries says. From popular media to the pages of the lexicon jumped ``wuss,'' ``trophy wife,'' ``in your face,'' ``diss'' and ``bummed,'' among others.

But now, Angus' nightly routine includes a computer, and his job is a jargon nightmare.

``Spam, flame, IMHO _ there's just so much linguistic fodder,'' he says. And so much more slang he has to sift through.
