KATE and Gerry McCann will hunt for missing daughter Madeleine on their own - as Portuguese police prepare to close their investigation.
The couple have asked cops to pass files and documents to private investigators.
And their spokesman Clarence Mitchell yesterday urged the Portuguese authorities to lift the McCanns' status as formal suspects in their daughter's disappearance He said: "They should not have been in this position. They have suffered for long enough."
