Fighting gridlock with CarTel: MIT researchers Sam Madden and Hari Balakrishnan use Linux-based automotive telematics system to help reduce traffic congestion.

CarTel is a GPS-enabled mobile sensor network that updates a central traffic analysis program using opportunistic WiFi links to exploit brief windows of coverage from vehicles. Associate Professor Sam Madden and Professor Hari Balakrishnan of MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) lead the project. The goal of CarTel is to build an affordable and flexible platform for use in diverse automotive-related research projects, which, investigate continuous-stream querying, mobility issues, intermittent WiFi, and fleet management applications.
