On February 18, 2008, the New York Times published an article by Patricia Cohen, "Midlife Suicide Rises, Puzzling Researchers," on its front page. The investigative report gave detailed information about the "unusually large increase in suicides among middle-aged Americans in recent years." Cohen cited rates recently released by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that document "the suicide rate among 45-to-54-year-olds" as having "increased nearly 20 percent from 1999 to 2004." In addition, the study found a "28.8 percent rise in the suicide rate among women ages 50 to 54."
