Birthday wishes from Number 10.

A Labour Party stalwart who has been a parish councillor for more than 40 years has been honoured by Downing Street on her 80th birthday.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown wrote to Easington Colliery parish councillor Myrtle MacPherson on her birthday last Tuesday.

In a commemorative letter to Coun MacPherson, Mr Brown describes his gratitude for her loyalty to the party and even congratulates the regular swimmer on being one of the first to benefit from the government's new free swimming for pensioners policy.
